On March 31, 1986 my wife and I sat in a room with 200 of our friends and co-workers at the South Central Headquarters of Mervyn’s Department Stores and were told that the company was closing the facility and we were all terminated.

It was, or we thought at the time, a serious trauma.

On May 8, 1997 my best friend died of pancreatic cancer. It was then that I learned the real definition trauma.

There is a difference between a trauma and an inconvenience. You get to write your own ending to the second.
